Future of Microbiome Research

SMI staff recently attended the Military Health Systems Research Symposium in Kissimmee, Florida. Among the many military research priorities highlighted in the course of the four day-long meeting, was research into the human and environmental microbiomes and how they might influence warfighter health. Research into the microbiome is poised to ramp up in the coming years as the Department of Defense and other agencies are planning on large investments as part of the National Microbiome Initiative.  All together, the federal government is planning on investing $121 million into microbiome research in the next fiscal year.

DOD Announces Manufacturing Innovation Institute Solicitations

Recently, the Department of Defense announced two additional Manufacturing Innovation Institutes (MII): Advanced Tissue Biofabrication MII and Robotics in Manufacturing Environments MII. MIIs are part of the U.S. government’s National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) initiative. The purpose of each institute is to create a regional center tasked with accelerating innovation, assisting the development of a well-trained workforce, educating the next generation of technicians, scientists, and engineers, as well as transition technologies that are critical to the U.S.’s manufacturing economy and national security. SMI staff have experience in matching clients with NNMI teams, supporting the NNMI application process, and have significant insights into the processes and priorities of the government review of NNMI applications.
