SMI Case Study: SBIR Phase II Success - Anti-fog Coating

SMI’s small business client had completed a Phase I SBIR from the Army for the development of an anti-fog coating for military eyewear, and were interested in securing a Phase II contract.  SMI worked with key staff in PEO Soldier, the customer for coated eyewear, as well as program staff at the Natick Soldier Research and Development Center to collect DOD requirements and priorities for anti-fog coatings, build support for our client’s approach and to familiarize the DOD with the client’s capabilities.

SMI also connected our client with a large chemical manufacturer that agreed to supply intermediate reagents for the production of the anti-fog coatings and act as a manufacturing scale-up partner.  By collecting end user requirements, putting together a strong team, and carefully editing the proposal and commercialization plan, SMI’s client was successful in capturing the Phase II SBIR contract, worth $1 million for a one year period of performance.
