SMI Case Study: DOE Vehicle Tech. R&D - New Plug-in Elec. Delivery Truck

SMI client is the world's largest independent company for the development of vehicle powertrain systems and specializes in internal combustion engine technology, as well as instrumentation and test systems.

Client was interested in pursuing Department of Energy funding which supported medium and heavy-duty truck electrification.  Several years prior to our engagement with client, SMI lobbied Congress to add funds to DOE to support truck electrification, initially for port authority applications.

This congressional direction to DOE has continued in subsequent budget years.  Client team was awarded a $2.6 million project by DOE to develop a Class 6 delivery truck with a scalable, innovative, lightweight, low-cost, and commercially-viable plug-in electric drive system that improves fuel economy by 100 percent.

SMI was instrumental in securing a leading parcel delivery company as the key commercialization partner for the project, and helped the client develop the program approach and proposal to win the award.  After only six months after engaging SMI, client was awarded funding by DOE.
