WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 12, 2018: Strategic Marketing Innovations (SMI) announced that Dr. Joe Larsen has joined the Life Sciences practice. Dr. Larsen most recently served as the Director of CBRN Medical Countermeasures for Department of Health and Human Service’s Biomedical Advanced Research Development Authority (BARDA).

In his role at BARDA, Dr. Larsen oversaw BARDA’s annual $535M advanced research and development portfolio as well as the $2.8 billion Project Bioshield program for the development and procurement of medical products for use during public health emergencies. Dr. Larsen also served as the BARDA lead on antimicrobial resistance, having designed and initiated BARDA’s clinical stage antibiotic program which led to the FDA approval of two novel antibiotics. Dr. Larsen also initiated CARB-X, a $500 million non-profit public-private partnership to combat drug resistant bacteria.
Prior BARDA, Dr. Larsen served as the Senor Science and Technology Manager for Biological Therapeutics at the Department of Defense’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), where he managed basic and applied scientific research leading to the development of therapeutic compounds for viral, bacterial and toxin threat agents.
Dr. Larsen is a former Science and Technology Policy Fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) during which time he supported the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate’s University Programs.
Dr. Larsen earned a BA with Honors in Microbiology from the University of Kansas and PhD in Microbiology with an Emphasis in Emerging Infectious Diseases from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the National Academies.
